The first-generation Range Rover was produced between 1970 and 1996. It was available only in a 2-door body until 1981. The Range Rover was a body-on-frame design with a box section ladder type chassis, like the contemporary Series Land Rovers. The Range Rover utilised coil springs as opposed to leaf springs, permanent four-wheel drive, and four-wheel disc brakes. Originally, the Range Rover was fitted with a de-tuned 130 hp Rover V8 engine.

Range Rover Classic. This is the last of the 2 door model sold in the UK, this exact year and type is currently available ‘new’ restored/rebuilt from Land Rover themselves for just £135,000... part of a ‘reborn’ project.
The vendor tells us that this particular car has had a lot of money spent on it, ranging from new fuel tank, new tyres, shot blasted repainted rostyles, full body respray, brand new interior, front and rear seats and door cards, headlining, full new carpet set, Holley carburettor, 4.6 heads, new head gaskets, new coil springs and shock absorbers all round, brake disks and pads, correct year upper tailgate, crossmember and rear boot floor. It also has the rare power steering option fitted.

The car is described as solid and starts and goes everytime, but is much more early Land Rover than modern Range Rover to drive! Underneath is solid and not covered in under seal hiding anything. It will leave a drop of oil but was built in the British Leyland era, and it’s a Land Rover if there no oil under it there’s no oil in it!
The early long throw 4 speed gearstick and rare Friary overdrive add to the driver experience and once you get used to the low geared steering and long levering it’s great fun to punt along country roads with a great ride and plenty of lean in the corners. The 4x4 grips well and is surprisingly compact and especially narrow (14 inches less than the current Evoque) so easy to place on the road, nip into gaps and parks in any normal space. Unlike modern SUV’s...
It’s defiantly one that could be improved, but only niggles, temp gauge stopped working and door locks sometimes need jiggling to lock or unlock but nothing to stop instant use and certainly this turns heads and has small children pointing!

A fun practical car to own but not too mint and precious to actually use. Its easy to see why they caught on!
