A GEORGE II EBONISED TABLE MANTEL CLOCK,
of small proportions, the 5" dial with silvered Roman and Arabic numeral chapter ring between foliate spandrels, with subsidiary seconds, date and mock pendulum apertures, signed Benjamin Gray, London, on a brass five pillar single fusee quarter pull repeating movement, similarly signed to backplate engraved with scrolling leaves around a basket of fruit, in a finely moulded bell top case with brass carry handle, height excluding handle 34cm
*Benjamin Gray (1676-1764) was one of the most prominent clock makers of the period, and was clock maker to George II from 1742. Gray worked out of Pall Mall from 1727, then moved to St. James' before returning to Pall Mall with Francois Justin Vulliamy as a partner in Gray & Vulliamy [ref: Brian Loomes, Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the Worlds, p.317]
