An Indo-Persian Pierced Calligraphic Tinned Copper Casket, 19th Century - An octagonal metal casket, crafted from a dark, likely silvered or tinned copper alloy, consistent with Islamic metalwork. The hinged lid and upper body band are ornately decorated with finely executed Arabic calligraphy, including the discernible phrase "بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful). The main body features extensive pierced work in an intricate arabesque or geometric pattern, giving it a filigree appearance, often referred to as 'jali' work. A functional hinged clasp secures the lid.
H: Approximately 16.5cm
The item displays significant patination and some verdigris on its interior, consistent with age. There is age-appropriate wear throughout. The casket appears structurally sound.
