A rare and interesting antique carved antler rope working tool fid or Marlinespike. The handle modelled as an animal paw with cross hatched grip, tapering to a pointed terminal. Such implements were traditionally used in rope making, netting, and maritime work to separate strands and assist with splicing and threading, these are often wrongly described as apple corers. Closely related examples have been recovered from the river Thames and other historic docklands contexts. Has a length of 12cm and a width of 3cm.
