1678 DATED BELLARMINE JUG. 9.8ins. Spectacular & highly impressive tiger glaze classic 1678 dated Bellarmine, extremely varied salt glaze, overall crude hand thrown form, quite insignificant old rim wear, & a few small flakes. Wonky hand applied rear handle. Very well modelled, familiar, Cardinal Bellarmino bearded face cartouche. Large belly cartouche below (few missing parts, glazed over missing parts - in manufacture, includes the date 1678 at the top with slightly indecipherable lettering all round. Just below the date is a crown, & below that a rearing beast - with horns? Super crude & extremely appealing/ highly attractive. We would rate this as the finest Bellarmine we have had the pleasure to offer. Dudley Davidson base sticker. Rare & Superb. NR.
