The W129 SL arrived in 1989 and was charged with maintaining the reputation of an SL heritage, dating back to 1963 and the original 230SL Pagoda. Even more daunting was trying to replace the 107 SL, which had been in production from 1971 to 1989 and had a huge following. When the car did arrive it owed nothing to its predecessors, in the styling department, which was considered, by many, to be a very brave move. Gone were the squared off corners and slight dished hard top and in came sharp styling with a nose down, tail up stance, similar to the 124 saloon. The hood was now electric and the hard top was now much more manageable in much lighter materials.

Offered here is an example of the range topping 500SL, which has been in he hands of the current owner since 2007 and was used, in London, occasionally until being exported to Cyprus. Once in Cyprus, the car was the subject of a full, professional repaint, a major service and full mechanical inspection, with everything seeming to be in need of repair or replacement being dealt with. All works were carried out by the local Mercedes dealer in Cyprus. The owner then presented the car to his daughter, as a gift, only for her to discover that it would cost €10,000 just to register the car in Cyprus. The car has been stored with the vendors own collection in the mean time, before being repatriated to the UK in June/July 2012.

Finished in Almandine red, the car is described as being in outstanding condition both mechanically and bodily. It is equipped with all of the options associated with the car, plus a wind deflector and is said to drive superbly. The car comes complete with both tops, extensive history and manuals.
