A collection of Coalport mugs and loving cups, comprising: a large toasting mug, transfer-printed in puce of a hound hunting a stag, opposed by a further related scene of hounds catching a scent, unmarked, small insect detailed in gilt to the interior to hide a manufacturing flaw, 11.2cm high and 13cm diameter; a twin-handled presentation loving cup, dated 1884, claret red ground painted with a large oval panel of a characterful dog, the opposing side decorated in gilt with the inscription 'A. PERRIS FROM HIS WIFE HANNAH 1884 SEPTEMBER 5', unmarked, 11.5cm high (one handle restuck); a mug, painted with a continuous landscape of figures fishing before ruins, 9cm high; a mug, inscribed 'J. Cooper 1846', apple green ground, 9cm high; a 'Trusty Servant' mug, transfer-printed in black with the painting taken from the kitchen at Winchester College, with a verse inscription to the reverse side, retailer's marks for "W. Hayter, Winchester", 9cm high; plus a later Ironbridge mug, 9cm high (6) Provenance: The C.R. Pilkington Collection, exhibited at the Coalport China Works Museum. Footnote:The Perris mug possibly relates to Alexander Perris (b. 1845) who married Hannah Salt on 28 Jul 1884 in Bucknall, Staffordshire. Condition:Hunting toasting mug - Small professionally restored rim chip and further restoration to the base of the handle. Some wear to gilt around upper rim. Perris Mug - One handle broken and restuck. Scratch through the chest of the dog. Figures fishing before ruins - Glaze crazing, some scratches to paint landscape, gilding wear to foot J.
