Hat Tax: 1796 2s Chestnut (for hats ‘VALUE ABOVE TWELVE SHILLINGS’) proof impression on thick laid paper of Plate 68 pos.16, (8 Sep. 1803 recut) crisp impression with large margins on all sides, marked in pencil ‘1803’ at lower right. Desirable and extremely rare. Proofs are the only practicable way to collect this issue as only a handful of original ‘stamps’ are known-these dies were engraved to be printed directly onto the cloth lining of hats.
