The Rover P6 is a wonderful example of 1970s futuristic thinking outside the box design. Employing both revolutionary engineering and creative flair Rover was keen that the P6 would not only pander to the existing enthusiasts but also entice a new breed of driver. It worked; the Solihull built saloon was a huge success with drivers and press alike and became the first ever car to be crowned ‘European Car of The Year’.

The P6 was available in three guises: Rover 2000 / Rover 2200 / Rover 3500, denoting the various engine displacements. Further identification was offered to a smaller number of relevant models with the letters TC (Twin Carburettor) or S (Syncromesh).

This particular Rover finished in classic Tobacco Leaf Brown is one example of the rarer 2 litre Twin Carb manual varieties and is in wonderful condition. It was supplied by Henleys of London to the first recorded owner, The Freemantle Hotel in Kensington, London. According to the last registered keeper the two previous owners were father and son who had owned the car for some considerable time and the vehicle had been kept in storage (supported by a clutch of old MoTs, one of which records a mileage of 37000 miles in 1988 and another 54000 in 1994). It had only had one owner until 2012 and we have been informed was taken off the road and stored until a comprehensive restoration took place. It also has an MOT Test Certificate valid until July 2015 with no advisories.

Accompanying the vehicle is a fascinating collection of original books from the day of sale way back in 1970 including maintenance book, optional equipment list, list of distributors and owner’s manual.

As the Rover’s Association quite rightly pointed out: 'A Rover owner is no ordinary motorist. His approach to motoring is considered and selective; he is a man who wants something better.' Unfortunately, this once great British manufacturer has been consigned to the history books so these cars represent not only innovative design, they are a part of our industrial history.
