RARE 1860s? PERKINS BACON ESSAY OF ENGINE-TURNED BACKGROUNDS WITH ENGRAVED OUTLINE OF STAMP DESIGN - c115x75mm piece of thickish wove paper on which is printed to two samples of background design, each with a different stamp outline engraved in the centre; marked in pencil with '87' and '85' at the side of each background, '246' at lower right and possibly initialled at left. The two stamp outlines with reserves at centre of each side, strongly indicative of an intention to contain a plate number; although undated it seems likely to be 1860s and the upper outline suggests a completely different design to that previously used. Accordingly, we suggest it is possible this is an important piece from the period where Perkins Bacon were trying to retain their contract. Rare.
