Details:
The best looking and most desirable of all the E-Type variants is the Series 1 Roadster, as we have here. Like all the earliest cars it is fitted with the legendary 3.8-litre XK straight-six which provides a much sportier feel than the later, softer 4.2-litre engine. Quoted as developing some 265bhp and 260lb/ft of torque in standard tune, it is mated to a four-speed Moss gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios. The earliest built cars utilised external bonnet latches which required a tool to open and they had a flat floor design. These cars are rare and other than significant competition E Type are the most coveted and valuable today. In late ’61 the twin bonnet latches were moved to inside the car and then the floors were dished to provide more leg room. The interior of these earliest cars is also the most sporting and attractive of all the E-Type range with lightweight bucket seats and that wonderful aluminium cockpit trim which could have come straight from a WW2 fighter. Quite apart from their sheer beauty, these are genuinely quick cars even by today’s standards, yet remain easy to live with and maintain (unlike Italian exotica) with all parts readily available and a whole army of specialists to service them. This particular car is number 1085 of the run and as its accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms, it was delivered to Jaguar Cars in New York on November 27th 1961. It was repatriated back to the UK and to the previous owner in May 1991 whereupon an enthusiastic no expense spared restoration began. Some 16 years later, with many fresh nuts and bolts and countless new parts, his restoration was finally finished and this fully restored E-Type was DVLA registered in August 2007. The result? The Holy Grail of E-Types in a condition that we would class as a very respectable 7/10. We have now completed the restoration with over 150 manhours spent and with the many related parts required and we now present to you an example which will not only turn heads from any angle but will withstand the closest inspection. We have seen Flat Floor Roadsters sell for in excess of £200,000 at auction and according to Wikipedia and conceptcarz.com, another Flat Floor made $528,000 in 2014. With prices soaring, surely this investment is safer than ‘money in the bank’ and a wonderful addition to any collection.
