The 8 Series debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1989. It had substantially improved performance, as well as a far higher purchase price. It offered the first V-12 engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox on a road car. It was the first car to feature CAN bus, a form of multiplex wiring for cars that is now an industry standard. It was also one of the first vehicles to be fitted with an electronic drive-by-wire throttle. Sales of the 8 Series were affected by the economic problems of the early 1990s, and BMW dropped it from the North American market in 1997, but it continued in Europe until 1999. Total production amounted to 31,062 cars.

A BMW 840 Ci 4.4 V8 coupe automatic in dark blue metallic with grey leather interior. Extras include electric steering column, electric front seats, electric sunroof, electric windows, air-conditioning, central locking, and a rear spoiler. It is also fitted with the uprated 4.4 engine and 5 speed transmission. This car is fitted with a working LPG BRC system, giving half price, greener fuel economy. The LPG filler is discreetly located under rear bumper. There are receipts for over a thousand pounds spent in 2016.

There are service receipts from a BMW 8 series specialist for extensive works carried out 3 years ago for £1,700. Also a few thousand was spent on the car around 2012 with the service receipts. Owner's handbook and tool kit are in the boot lid.
