In the mid 1960s, BMW introduced a coupé based on their successful 2000 saloon with strikingly aggressive styling in a body built by German coach builders, Karmann. This was the basis for the 1968 2800CS with a longer wheelbase and a 2.8-litre version of the company's new six-cylinder engine. These cars established BMW as legitimate claimants to mass production and successful sales figures, with the 'new' six-cylinder range encroaching into Mercedes and Jaguar territory.

By 1971, this range had been joined by a very much improved car, the 3.0CS, still wearing the Karmann built body but powered by the latest 180bhp 3-litre engine and with a reworked chassis plus 4-wheel disc brakes. This was, of course, the basis for the now legendary CSL homologation special or Batmobile, as it became known, that was to gain BMW much publicity from its winning ways in European Touring Car racing. The old adage 'Win on Sunday, sell on Monday' was never more true than with this car, which helped BMW sales across the board. Now quite a rarity, the 3.0CS outnumbered the CSL in production by more than 10:1 but the survival rate of the latter has undoubtedly been greater. In the year of this example's production, 1972, only 1,215 were produced and as total CSA production worldwide numbered a paltry 3,667, really clean examples are hard to find and offer excellent value for money.

Having been owned by just one owner for the vast majority of it's life, some 16 years in fact, and having recently benefited from a refurbishment and service at a BMW specialist, this car is a stylish, powerful and attractive proposition for the enthusiastic collector or enthusiast.

The car is only being offered for sale due to sudden health problems and was only acquired, by the vendor, in November 2011. It is said to start on the button, be equipped with four new wheels and tyres and is an excellent driving car.
