MAGDALEN CHAPEL. The Psalms & Hymns ... Sung at the Magdalen Chapel, Adapted for the Voice, Harpsichord &c. Eng. frontis. 32pp. Rebacked quarter calf. Bookplate of Robert Montgomery, Convoy. A New Edition, Part 1, 1791. Magdalen Hospital was established in Whitechapel in 1758 as an institution to house penitent prostitutes. Although called a 'hospital', the regime was akin to that of a nunnery. The hospital had no shortage of inmates, and in 1769 it moved to larger premises in Southwark. The Chapel at the new premises became a fashionable place of worship, where the inmates would be observed with curiosity by the other worshippers.
