£380 - £400
Crimea "Sebastopol" to Paymaster of HMS "Odin".
Named in attractive engraved caps. to : John Hay Paymaster H.M.S. Odin.
Condition - NEF.
With research notes and copies of papers, rolls etc. - Hay was born in 1815 and entered RN service as a Clerk in 1843; Paymastyer 1847.
He served on an interesting array of warships, inlcuding anti-slavery actions off West Africa in HMS "Larne" and "Hecla".
Was Paymaster aboard "Odin" from Feb. 1853 to May 1858 and served with that ship in the Baltic in 1854 (medal) and would have been on the ship when she took part in the audacious raid on the Bomarsund forts in June 1854 (with "Hecla" and "Valorous") which was severely criticised at the time! Odin was very actively engaged throughout that campaign.
Hay served ashore in the Crimea and occurs several times in "The Cree Journals" - Cree being surgeon on the same ship.
Hay retired in1863 and died in Portsmouth in July 1886.
An interesting medal to a good ship for the Russian War.
