Mercedes unveiled its new six cylinder W111 220 models in 1959, introducing the second generation of saloons and coupés to use the 220 model designation. Like the previous 220, the new cars had a 2195cc six cylinder engine with choice of either S or SE specifications. The more expensive SE Coupé and Cabriolet models featured fuel injection and 1962 disc brakes.

The 220 Coupé shared its two door body with the convertible Cabriolet. The elegant roof line featured a large 'wrap-round' rear screen and pillarless doors. Unlike the smaller engined 'Fintail' models, the 220 came with 'stacked' headlamps either side of the traditional Mercedes grille. Production of the W111 continued until 1965.

Here we have a very rare example of the sought after 280SE coupe 3.5 V8 The car was acquired by the vendor, in California, earlier this year and was bought with the full intention of restoring to its former glory. However, due to a backlog of work in progress he has decided to offer it for auction. A recent import from a dry US state the car is in very sound condition. Equipped with the 3.5 litre V8 and with an excellent interior.

A running, driving example, with a healthy sounding engine. the car has been inspected on a vehicle hoist and has been found to be very solid, with only minimum cosmetic welding needed. This is an ultra rare specimen as it has a sunroof. The car is described as being 99% complete and includes several unobtainable parts, however most body and service items are still available from Mercedes Old timer dealers.

This particular model is appreciating fast and any money invested, in restoration costs, should be easily recouped in the future.
