When Alec Issigonis designed the Mini, he planned another vehicle to share the Mini's mechanical parts, but with a more rugged body shell. This was an attempt to take a portion of the military vehicle business from Land Rover. Issigonis had previously designed the Nuffield Guppy in a failed attempt to break into that market. By 1959, BMC had working prototypes of what was code named "The Buckboard", later to become the Mini Moke. These prototypes were shown to the British Army as a parachute-droppable vehicle, but poor ground clearance and a low-powered engine did not meet the most basic requirements for an off-road vehicle. Only the Royal Navy showed any interest at all in the Buckboard—as a vehicle for use on the decks of aircraft carriers.

The Moke became a bit of cult car in the 1960's especially after it was heavily featured in the TV series "The Prisoner". But despite this following, just 10% of Mokes built in the UK, actually stayed in the UK. The Moke was also built in Australia and Portugal, The Italian motorcycle manufacturer Cagiva acquired the rights to the Moke from the Rover Group and continued to build Mokes, in Portugal, until 1993, when all tooling was transferred to Italy. The original intention was to restart production in 1995 but that never happened.

In all there were around 50,000 Mini Mokes, Leyland Mokes and Mokes built between the UK, Australia and Portugal over a 30 year period with the fewest number being sold in the UK.

Offered here is a fully restored example of a genuine, 1967 Mini Moke. The car is equipped with an uprated 1275cc engine and has benefited from a recent gearbox overhaul. The history file contains invoices for these works, plus much more and 11 previous MoT certificates, which show that the car has covered just 8,000 miles since 1990,

Finished in chrome yellow the car is offered complete with excellent hood and side screens, which were bought new in 2004 and have been little used since. Sitting on Minilite style alloy road wheels and equipped with a leather rimmed steering wheel, the car is said to be in excellent condition throughout.

Note: This Moke is offered complete with the 1275cc engine fitted, plus the original engine, which is in excellent condition.
