The Series 3 XJ saloon would be the final incarnation of the car that started life back in 1968. First seen in 1978 this face lifted model had been much reworked by Pininfarina and the results were very evident. All of the subtle curves were removed from light clusters, window surrounds and grill. The side glass area was much increased by changes to the tumble-home design of the windows. The interior was sharpened up and engines gained fuel injection. There was also a 5 speed manual option. The model, in 6 cylinder form, would cease production in April 1987.
Offered here is a very low mileage specimen of the Series three in 4.2 form. The car was originally owned by Ron Buck of Alvis Owners Club fame, who was well known for his fastidious care of his cars. During his ownership the car appeared in the glossy, hard back book "Classic Cars" by Roger Hicks, where it was given a three page spread. The Jaguar remained with Mr. Buck until 2003, when it was acquired by Mr Spencer Nevitt, who barley used the car and kept it under a cover, which had a negative effect on the paintwork. The car finally passed to a Mrs Hopwood, earlier this year, who also used the car very sparingly.
The car has covered a warranted 21,000 miles from new. The paperwork includes a brief, hand-written, history of the car together with all of the original handbooks and 25 previous MoT certificates, which support the mileage as correct.
This is a rarity indeed and once the paintwork is sorted, would make a superb addition to any Jaguar collection.
