The Triumph TR4A was built between 1965 and 1967. It was an evolution of the TR4, updated, with a new chassis, and body design by Michelotti. It was hoped the new independent rear suspension would address the buying public's desire for more comfortable riding sports cars. This version has an "IRS" badge on the rear. It has been estimated that 75 percent of TR4A were built with IRS. In response to dealer requests, about 25 percent of TR4As were produced with a live rear axle option, similar to the earlier TR4. The TR4A was the first vehicle to offer an option for axle type. 1st, 2nd and 3rd in class at the Sebring 12-hour race of 1966. In 1968 the TR4A was replaced by the 6-cylinder TR5 model with fuel injection.

This example is a UK car built on 19th May 1967 and first registered in Plymouth on 21st June 1967. There is no history of the car between 1967 and 1988, but from 1988 there is a box of paperwork relating to receipts for work done, spare parts, MOTs, proof of ownership, photos, sale and insurance documents. These documents reveal that the car had a recorded mileage of 99,059 when MOT'd in 1989. In 1999 the MOT mileage was recorded as 833, so it seems the car had little use at this time.

When the vendor bought the car in 2012 it had a speedometer mileage of 4,099. The previous owner was known to him, and he had bought the car in 2000 and spent a considerable amount of money on it between 2000 and 2005. Work done included, replacing the glass, the exhaust system (now stainless steel with chrome twin pipe), new suspension, new mohair hood, engine work by Racetorations (it has a high-lift fast road cam it is said), fly-off handbrake, new wire wheels, underbody 'waxoyl' protection and other improvements. This owner drove the car between 2000 and 2006 then it was laid up in his dry garage until 2012 gathering dust.

When the vendor bought it in 2012, he had it trailered to Jigsaw Racing Services in Corby who recommissioned it for the road. They carried out a complete top to toe inspection and necessary maintenance of all mechanicals and electricals, at a total cost of circa £6,000. They had to replace the speedometer internals and cable, and hence the mileage was reset to 0. A high torque starter motor was fitted, a new aluminium fuel tank fitted, new brakes and tyres all round including the spare (unused) and other minor improvements, including an alternator.

The vendor has dry stored the car in his garage from 2012 to 2020. The car passed its annual MOT tests between 2012 and 2017. The car comes with the original steering wheel but they are notorious for the horn sounding on full lock, so it is activated by a rocker switch under the steering wheel along with another flip switch to activate auxiliary lights. It also has fitted seatbelts, and a 12v ‘cigarette lighter’ power source, which is very useful for Sat Nav, charging the phone, USB devices, etc. It has just had a new battery, the brakes bled, an oil and filter change, grease points, etc. It is now driven occasionally in dry weather only, and has completed only 2,848 miles since 2012. In summary a much loved and pampered car with very solid mechanicals and considered improvements. The car has a Heritage Certificate.
