CIRCLE OF GEORGE STUBBS, 1724 - 1806, A LARGE MID 18TH CENTURY OIL ON CANVAS
Horse attacked by lion before a rocky landscape, signed Stubbs lower right, bearing Christie’s stencil verso, held in a fine gilt frame, relined.
(sight 76.5cm x 97cm, canvas 78.5cm x 99cm, frame 104.5cm x 124.5cm)

The composition relates closely to George Stubbs’ celebrated Lion Attacking a Horse series of the early 1760s, a subject that combines anatomical precision with heightened drama. It corresponds particularly to the engraving by Benjamin Green (1769) with slight differences taken from a painting formerly in the collection of Luke Scrafton Esq., now considered lost.

The surface has been cleaned, with some reduction to the original glazes
