Hat Tax: 1796 1s Chestnut (for hats ‘VALUE TWELVE SHILLINGS AND ABOVE SEVEN SHILLINGS’) proof impression on thick laid paper from Plate 57 pos.35, (15 Nov. 1804 Recut) crisp impression with large margins on all sides, with pencil ‘1803’ at lower right. Desirable and extremely rare. Proofs are the only practicable way to collect this issue as only a handful of original ‘stamps’ are known-these dies were engraved to be printed directly onto the cloth lining of hats.
