A late Victorian sapphire and diamond brooch. Of openwork design, the oval-shape sapphire, with old-cut diamond scrolling foliate surround, suspending a similarly-cut diamond drop. Estimated dimensions of sapphire 7.7 by 6 by 4.2mms. Estimated total diamond weight 4.50 to 5cts. Four principal diamonds estimated I-J colour, SI1-P1 clarity. Length 5.3cms. Weight 14.1gms.

  • Overall condition good. Some surface scratches/wear in keeping with general age and wear.
  • Evidence of alterations and repair to mount, some gems possible replacements.

  • Diamonds fairly well matched, a few drawing more colour than the others, with varied inclusions, some of which may be surface reaching.
  • Principal diamond in drop estimated tinted colour, SI clarity.

  • Six smaller diamonds are rose-cut, one is single-cut.

  • Individual size and setting of smaller diamonds prevents accurate colour and clarity assessment.

  • Sapphire is a medium to dark blue hue, fairly well saturated, with good clarity and typical inclusions.

  • Sapphire in good condition with minor abrasions and nibbles to the facet edges.
