Richard Morley (1775-1855) was born at Sneinton Manor Nottingham, the son of a small farmer and hosiery manufacturer. He went into partnership with his brother John trading as I & R Morley and greatly developed the hosiery business in Nottingham whilst John opened a London warehouse. Richard Morley was Mayor of Nottingham in 1836 and 1841 and Alderman, Justice of the Peace and Chairman of the Board of Guardians. He was particularly active in social welfare and instrumental in the establishment of The Mechanics Institute
