German painter of the 20th century. Representative of magical realism. Belongs to the so-called lost or forgotten generation. 1909 to 1911 at the technical school for decorative painting in Saarbrücken and 1911 to 1913 training with the Saarbrücken painter Richard Wenzel. From 1913 studies at the Royal Academy in Dresden with Richard Müller, Robert Sterl, Otto Gussmann, Gotthardt Kuehl and Eugen Bracht. Member of the Saarland Artists' Association. 1924 to 1936 director of the Saarland School of Arts and Crafts. 1937 during the Nazi action Degenerate Art several paintings by him destroyed. From 1942 exhibition ban. 1936 to 1950 lecturer at the Werkkunstschule Trier, from 1950 at the Landeskunstschule Mainz. Early works influenced by Expressionism, partly elements of New Objectivity. Collected Wassily Kandinsky and George Braque. Created mainly genre paintings and floral still lifes with, for example, rubber trees, cacti and lemons.
