1970 witnessed the exciting arrival of Britain's answer to the Mercedes Benz SL, the Triumph Stag. Unfortunately the all new design would suffer the indignity of British Leyland's poor management and quality problems throughout most of its early life although these problems have long since been "sorted" by the Stag's loyal band of specialists and enthusiasts.

The Stag consisted of a stylish two door open tourer body, which came from the pen of Triumph's favourite Michelotti and with an all new Triumph 3 litre V8 engine. The Stag's engine was never used in any other BL model and was the controversial cause of many of the car's problems, which was a pity as the engine developed 145bhp and produced a pleasant exhaust note.

The Stag came as either a convertible with optional hardtop and could be specified with either manual or auto transmission. Despite the problems with quality and lack of development, the Stag continued in production until 1978 and survives today in healthy numbers.

The Triumph Stag has at last come of age and is being recognised for all the right reasons. Now over 40 years old, the model is beginning to be appreciated and values are on the rise but they still represent extraordinary value for money. What other British classic, offering V8 power, 4 seats, al fresco motoring and Italian styling, can you buy for under £10,000?

While the majority still retain the original Triumph 3.0 V8, many were converted to straight six, V6 and Rover V8 power. The straight six used the Triumph 2000 or 2.5 engine and the V6 used the Ford Essex 3.0 unit but the most popular and least disadvantaged conversion is the Rover 3.5 V8 engine, which is what we have here.

The car is equipped with said 3.5 V8 but also benefits from Offenhauser inlet manifold, Holley 4 barrel carburettor, tubular exhaust manifold and stainless steel exhaust system. The 3.5 V8 fits under the bonnet with no modifications due to the use of the Offenhauser inlet manifold and low profile, chrome, air filter housing. The vendor has recently fitted a re-cored radiator and new water pump due to impeller failure. Engine cooling is taken care of by a Kenlowe fan. The dash is burr walnut and the car has a Motolita wood rim steering wheel.

The car is offered complete with an excellent and comprehensive history file, including owners manual, excellent soft top and a very sound hard top. Finished in white with nutmeg interior, which is in very good condition, the car is said to drive well and comes complete with a comprehensive history file, an MoT through to March 2015 and is taxed to the end of September. The car will now qualify for free Historic Tax.
