1970 witnessed the exciting arrival of Britain's answer to the Mercedes Benz SL, the Triumph Stag. Unfortunately the all new design would suffer the indignity of British Leyland's poor management and quality problems throughout most of its early life although these problems have long since been "sorted" by the Stag's loyal band of specialists and enthusiasts.
The Stag consisted of a stylish two door open tourer body, which came from the pen of Triumph's favourite Michelotti and with an all new Triumph 3 litre V8 engine. The Stag's engine was never used in any other BL model and was the controversial cause of many of the car's problems, which was a pity as the engine developed 145bhp and produced a pleasant exhaust note.
The Stag came as either a convertible with optional hardtop and could be specified with either manual or auto transmission. Despite the problems with quality and lack of development, the Stag continued in production until 1978 and survives today in healthy numbers.
The Triumph Stag has at last come of age and is being recognised for all the right reasons. Now over 40 years old, the model is beginning to be appreciated and values are on the rise but they still represent extraordinary value for money. What other British classic, offering V8 power, 4 seats, al fresco motoring and Italian styling, can you buy for under £10,000?
The Stag offered here has been in a large and eclectic collection, which is now being sold off due to bereavement. With just one previous owner prior to the current registered keeper, the car has been stored for some time and may need some recommissioning. It is finished in Damson and is equipped with the desirable manual transmission, with overdrive, has the original Triumph V8 engine and comes with both hard and soft tops, both of which are in good order.
