Sale Description:
GENERAL, ANTIQUES & COLLECTABLES

A.S.H. Auctions have been instructed to sell by auction, the personal works of the late master craftsman Mr Peter Smith. The majority of the items are in the sale this Sunday 10th December 2017 and and remaining are in the sale on the 17th December 2017.

Peter Smith, Ceramic Artist, born 8th August 1936 in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent.
Peter began his 45 year career in the ceramic industry in 1954. During that time he worked at Royal Doulton, Royal Crown Derby and Minton, with most of his career spent in the Prestige Department of Royal Doulton. He put his natural talent to good effect, working on such renowned pieces as Princess Badoura (HN2081), Jack Point (HN2080), Matador And Bull (HN2324), King Charles (HN2084) and Leopard On Rock (HN2638). He was particularly gifted in the arts of free-hand painting, raised-paste gilding and pattern gilding, and much of his work exemplifies these skills. Peter was commissioned on many special pieces, including Lion and Unicorn sculpture candlesticks for the Queen to commemorate the Silver Jubilee in 1977. In addition to ceramic work, Peter also painted on canvas and enjoyed working with oils and watercolours.
Peter retired from Royal Doulton in 1999, but continued to paint and he was an active member of the British China and Porcelain Artists Association, regularly hosting and tutoring workshops. In September 2000 he ran an exhibition at Hanley Library, The Disappearing Art of the Potteries, such was his commitment to sharing his skills and passion for local ceramic art.
Peter remained an active painter until he sadly passed away on 3rd November 2017 and was one of the last remaining true Master Gilders, maintaining his exceptional skills throughout his latter years.

Condition Reports

1. Due to a vast increase in absentee bidding we are having to do more condition reports, We have over 500 lots passing through each of our weekly sales making it very difficult and time consuming to examine ever single item. Items that we have been asked to give condition reports on are only given a visual inspection, that means in the case of say ceramics, we visually check for any obvious damage or repair. We DO NOT use any other inspection devises apart from when asked for hallmarks where we use a magnifying glass if needed. Buyers must be aware that a sale by auction is still basically a trade sale and to be sure they should really attend the sale and inspect the items themselves.
