Over 940 Lots of antiques and old shop fittings, etc. go up for public auction in Mullingar next weekend in a two-day sale, Saturday & Sunday, September 29th & 30th, by well-know auctioneers Matthews of Oldcastle. The auction is by order the Executors Miss. Corinna O'Sullivan, deceased.
Originally founded in 1926 by Michael J. O'Sullivan, O'Sullivan's &
Co. Drapery Store was a Mullingar Institution until it's closure in 2016. After Michael's death in 1948 the business was carried on by his Widow Eileen and their daughter Corinna (who died in 2015) until it's closure in 2016. Purposely designed by the founder, the extensive and original shop premises rests below the family's prominent six bedroom Georgian cut-stone townhouse.
A prosperous business from the start, Corinna and her father were noted collectors who attended, and bought at, many of the local and national 'Big House' clearance auctions in the mid and late-twentieth century. Amongst them Belvedere House, of which a few original pieces are in the auction. The collection to be dispersed next weekend is the family collection built up over the past 90 years along with other items entered from local estates.
Corinna, a very stylish and well-known beauty in her day, was a respected member of the local business community, and fondly remembered for her involvement in various local organisations including the Mullingar Bridge Club, Mullingar Golf Club and The Third Order in Multyfarnham. She was also a generous benefactor to various local charitable organisations.

The Highest Bidder to be the buyer. If any dispute arises the auctioneers shall have absolute discretion to settle it and put any disputed lot up again for sale.
All buyers are deemed to have read and understood our methods of payment, as outlined here; Cash, personal cheque, Lazer Debit Cards. Visa and MasterCard credit cards are accepted but are subject to a surcharge of 3%.
All buyers Accounts are to be settled within 24 hours of commencement of auction.
Buyers premium 19.5% excluding Vat. For Outside Auctions & House Contents Auctions Buyer’s Commission is also 19.5%. Vat at 23% will Apply to this Commission.
All lots are put up for sale subject to any reserve price imposed by the vendor.
While the possession in a lot shall not pass to the Buyer until he/she has paid the purchase price in full, ownership of the offered lot shall pass to the buyer upon the fall of the hammer when the auctioneer announces the lot has been sold. From which point the buyer shall assume full risk and responsibility for the lot. The buyer – if requested – is to give in full their full name and address, again, if requested, the buyer to pay down a 50% part payment of the purchase money: in default of which the lot or lots purchased may be immediately put up again and resold.
All lots are sold as shown with all faults, Imperfections and errors of description or of genuineness of authenticity. Messrs. Matthews Auction Rooms makes no warranty whatsoever. See (10).
The lots to be taken away at the buyer’s risk and expense, not later than 5.00pm on the day following the sale; in default of which Messrs. Matthews Auction Rooms will not hold themselves responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. They will be left at the sole risk of the purchaser and subject to a charge of 10 euros per lot per day storage charge. If, at the expiration of two days after the conclusion of the auction (unless otherwise agreed) the lots are not cleared and/or paid for, they may be sold immediately either publicly or by private treaty without notice being given to the defaulters.
It is the buyers’ responsibility to measure any item to ensure it can be accommodated in its’ intended location. All buyers must check their purchases before the lots leave the building. Matthews Auction Rooms will accept no claims for loss or damage thereafter.
Upon failure of the buyer to comply with any of the above conditions, any money deposited in part payment shall be forfeited; and the defaulter shall make good any loss arising from the resale, together with charges & expenses in respect of both sales.
Care is taken to ensure that any statement as to ?authorship, attribution, origin, date, age, provenance and condition is reliable and accurate but all ?statements are statements of opinion and are not to be taken as statements or representations of fact. The auctioneers reserve the right in the forming of their ?opinion to consult and rely upon the expert or Authority reasonably considered by them to be reliable.
Written bids (“Commission Bids”) shall be taken and carried out for the convenience of the bidders. Messrs. Matthews Auction Rooms shall not be responsible for failing to execute such bids or errors relating to the execution of such bids.
Live telephone bids are accepted at the auctioneers discretion, but only on lots with an estimate of 300 euros upwards.
