Big Art Secret 2 - St Wilfrid's Hospice Charity Auction

Grayson Perry CBE, the award winning artist and presenter of the prestigious 2013 BBC Reith Lectures, has created and gifted five pieces of original postcard sized art, to help raise funds through a Secret Art Auction, for two UK charities based in East Sussex UK- St Wilfrid’s Hospice and the Towner, the Contemporary Art Museum for the South East of England.

The auction, hosted by eBay, will be online from the 14th -23rd of March. The bidding starts at just 99 pence and no one knows for sure whose art they have acquired until the end of the auction, when all of the artists’ identities are revealed. So you might get a Grayson Perry masterpiece for next to nothing, or a piece of art to cherish, by a famous celebrity for as little as a few pounds.

Some 1350 postcard sized original works of art have been especially created and gifted for the auction in an extraordinary expression of support for two great charities. Local professional and amateur artists have been joined by internationally renowned artists, celebrities and public figures such as Grayson Perry, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and British Minister of Education Michael Gove, along with David Dimbleby TV commentator and presenter of coverage of major national events in the UK; Graham Norton, entertainer and TV and radio personality, and Scottish actor, theatre director and novelist Tom Conti.

Other famous personalities have also supported the event with art including Ronnie Corbett, the Scottish actor and comedian especially known for the iconic The Two Ronnies TV series starring Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker, who has contributed two pieces, along with Ranulph Fiennes the explorer extraordinaire, fundraiser, author and public speaker; Katherine Granger Olympic rowing gold medal winner; Andrew Marr journalist, political commentator and TV personality; Chris Difford musician, songwriter, record producer and singer and guitarist of English Pop Group ‘Squeeze’ and Matt Berry, actor, musician and comedian.

Last time the Secret Art Auction was held, it attracted some 15000 bids worldwide with just 600 pieces of art and we anticipate even greater interest this time and all the money raised goes to the two charities with 80% to St Wilfrid’s Hospice and 20% to Towner Charitable Trust.
