History in the Spotlight: Two Extraordinary Relics of 20th-Century Power and Politics

Eastbourne Auctions upcoming sale brings together two powerful artefacts from the turbulent first half of the 20th century.

1. The Bronze Death Mask of Josef Stalin

Cast in patinated bronze and measuring 34 cm in height, this striking death mask captures the stillness of Josef Stalin in his final repose. The mask reflects the austere dignity and chilling aura of one of history’s most formidable and controversial leaders.

Lot 2683 - A Patinated Bronze Death Mask of Josef Stalin, 34cm high

2. Oswald Mosley’s Black Trilby Hat and Memorabilia

Equally evocative is a remarkable collection linked to Sir Oswald Mosley — the British politician and founder of the British Union of Fascists. The centrepiece is Mosley’s black trilby hat, housed in a G.A. Dunn & Co. box and inscribed Sir Oswald Mosley. Accompanying the hat are two Black Shirt Automobile Club radiator badges and a selection of printed photographs.

Lot 2657 - Oswald Mosley's Black Trilby Hat with Box by G A Dunn & Co

Together, these items serve as a stark reminder of a dark yet fascinating chapter in Britain’s interwar history. They carry immense historical weight — not as symbols of ideology, but as artefacts of memory, politics, and the dangers of charismatic extremism.

For collectors, historians, and museums, they represent opportunities to preserve - and critically interpret - two potent relics of the 20th century’s most turbulent ideologies.
